Former world heavyweight champion boxer Tommy Morrison has died, according to one of his former promoters.
Tony Holden told the Tulsa World that Morrison, who was born in Jay, Okla., and later fought in Kansas City, died Sunday night in Omaha, Neb. He was 44.
“It’s true,” said Holden, who resides in Tulsa. “He was with his wife, Trisha, when he passed.”
Morrison’s family has not commented.
Diana Morrison, who lives in Aurora, Mo., said last month that her son, a former heavyweight champion, was “in the end stages” from full-blown AIDS.
Holden announced that Morrison had tested positive for HIV in February 1996, after the Nevada Athletic Commission said he had tested positive.
At various points since then, Morrison denied that he had the virus and has also said he believed the virus did not cause AIDS.
Morrison won the WBO heavyweight title on June 7, 1993, with a unanimous decision over George Foreman in Las Vegas.
