Junior flyweight Jocelyn Camarillo aims to hold a world title at the same time as her boyfriend, current WBO flyweight beltholder Anthony Olascuaga.
“That’s the goal: to be that power couple,” Camarillo told BoxingScene.
Camarillo, 3-0 (0 KOs), turned professional last year and has won each of her fights by unanimous decision.
Olascuaga, 9-1 (6 KOs), defeated Riku Kano in July for the vacant WBO title.
“I believed in him before he was a world champion, and it happened,” said Camarillo, a 20-year-old from Coachella, California. “He believes in me, and I know that I can get there, too. He’s set that example for me and been such an inspiration.”
Olascuaga, a 26-year-old from Los Angeles, last defended his title in March against Hiroto Kyoguchi, taking a unanimous decision in his second defense of his title.
“I think I get more nervous than him,” Camarillo said. “I think he just gets more hyped up and tells me, ‘You got this.’ I'm the same way, but a little nervous. When he comes to my fights, he’s the loudest one there.”
So how did Camarillo get into boxing?
“I would watch boxing growing up a lot when I started it. It was never anything serious, but I just did it to try something new, and I ended up falling in love with it,” Camarillo said. “After I had my first fight and I won, I decided to do this. This is something I want to do.”
Camarillo turned pro in June after a conversation with her father, Valente Camarillo, where she told him she was ready to make the transition to the pros.
Jocelyn trains with Valente but has also put in work at the Top Rank Boxing Gym in Las Vegas alongside prospects Iyana “Right Hook Roxy” Verduzco and Alan Garcia. Camarillo noted that Rudy Hernandez, who coaches Olascuaga, has been helping her as well.
While most have to transition from an amateur style to the pros, Camarillo feels she had a pro style while in the amateurs.
“I feel like in the amateurs it’s all about points and throwing a lot, and not so much about power. It is about letting your hands go,” Camarillo said. “Every time I am in the ring, I like to prove a point and show I can bang, too.”
