Christian Mbilli’s road to a world title will have an interim stop.

Mbilli, a Montreal-based super middleweight, will face Poland’s Maciej Sulecki on June 27 at the Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Canada. The fight will be contested for the WBC interim super middleweight title, with the winner in line – ostensibly – to get a shot at the belt currently held by Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Alvarez will look to unify the belts on May 3 when he faces IBF titleholder William Scull for the undisputed 168lbs championship in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The news was first reported by Manouk Akopyan of Ring Magazine. Sulecki's manager Lukasz Kownacki confirmed the news to BoxingScene via text message. An email to Eye of the Tiger Management, which promotes Mbilli, was not immediately returned late Tuesday night.

A press conference announcing the fight is set for Wednesday in Quebec City.

Mbilli, 28-0 (23 KOs), is rated No. 1 by the WBC and WBA, and had been struggling to lock in an opponent for an elimination bout, beginning with an aborted IBF eliminator with amateur rival Kevin Lele Sadjo, which was abandoned in February. The WBC then ordered Mbilli to face Diego Pacheco in March, but Pacheco had been withdrawn from those considerations earlier this month, on the eve of a purse bid.

Sulecki, 33-3 (13 KOs), of Warsaw, Poland, is coming off a career-reviving final-round stoppage of Ali Akhmedov in February. The 35-year-old Sulecki had previously fought once before for a world title, losing a shutout unanimous decision to Demetrius Andrade in 2019 for the WBO middleweight title. Prior to the Akhmedov fight, in August 2024, Andrade was knocked out in six rounds by Pacheco.

Sulecki is rated No. 7 by the WBC at 168lbs.

According to Akopyan, the co-featured bout will be Erik Bazinyan against Steven Butler. Bazinyan, 32-1-1 (23 KOs), is coming off his first career defeat, a 10th-round knockout loss to Jaime Munguia in September. The 29-year-old Bazinyan is based in Laval, just outside of Montreal, but was born in Armenia.

Montreal’s Butler, 35-5-1 (29 KOs), last fought in November, stopping Fernando Farias in one round.

The card is expected to air live on ESPN+.
