Teofimo Lopez isn’t offended by being the betting underdog for the first time entering a professional prizefight.
The ever-confident, unbeaten IBF lightweight champion is just certain that the handicappers have gotten this one wrong. Most Internet and casino sports books list Vasiliy Lomachenko as between a 3-1 and 4-1 favorite approximately a month before the Ukrainian southpaw is scheduled to oppose Lopez in their 135-pound title unification fight.
That’s fine by Brooklyn’s Lopez. The 23-year-old champion implored gamblers to put their money on him while the odds are this wide during a recent appearance on “The Ak And Barak Show,” which DAZN streams and SiriusXM broadcasts Monday through Friday.
When asked by co-host Barak Bess if he is bothered by the odds on their fight, Lopez replied, “Nah. Hell, no! Actually, I want the odds to be more in his favor. That way, I can bet on myself and make some more money on the side. You know what I mean?
“But, you know, I think by the end of the night, once we get into after the weigh-ins and everything, I think this fight might end up becoming 50-50. You know what I mean? So, if you wanna make some money off of Teofimo, place your bets now.”
ESPN will televise Lomachenko-Lopez on October 17 from MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas.
In addition to Lopez’s IBF belt, they’ll fight for the WBA and WBO lightweight titles that the 32-year-old Lomachenko owns. Lomachenko, a two-time Olympic gold medalist who has won world titles in three divisions, also is recognized as the WBC’s franchise champion within the 135-pound division.
Their accomplishments aside, Lopez (15-0, 12 KOs) is convinced he’ll overwhelm the skillful yet smaller Lomachenko (14-1, 10 KOs).
“Really, it’s just I’m gonna talk my talk and I’m gonna walk the walk,” Lopez said. “You know what I mean? I’m gonna talk my sh*t, and that’s just who I am. You know, I know what I’m capable of doing. And at the end of it all, it’s in my hands anyway. You know what I mean? When I’m in that ring, that’s how I feel.”
