In what’s shaping up to be one of the most anticipated fights of the year, Sergio Martinez will square off against WBC Middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr on September 15th in Las Vegas, NV at the Thomas & Mack Center.

During the kickoff press tour for the fight, Martinez and Chavez were extremely vocal against each other as both promised victories and dominant performances. Martinez uncharacteristically engaged in the trash talk and even said he would pluck the feathers off Chavez insinuating Chavez was a chicken. It was definitely great for the build up and enjoyable for those watching.

When Martinez stopped by BoxingScene’s official radio show The Boxing Lab, he was asked where exactly the animosity and trash talk stemmed from given Martinez’s calm demeanor in route to his other fights.

“For his part, I don’t know. But on my part, it started when they went back on their word. They said the first defense of his title would be against me and 3 defenses passed [and he didn’t fight me]” said Martinez.

“That hurt me and that made me upset. That wasn’t fair to me. So that’s why I’ve been talking like I have because of that”.

Despite another big fight taking place down the street at the MGM Grand, Martinez-Chavez has sold upwards of 13,000 tickets and garnering more attention as the date draws near. A rematch or even a trilogy would be a lucrative option for the Argentina native who has been waiting for this fight but he doesn’t feel a rematch or additional fights will be necessary.

“Sincerely, I don’t think that will ever happen” answered Martinez in response to if a trilogy would be a possibility.

“I will beat him in the best manner possible and I don’t think he’ll want a rematch. Hopefully more than one fight can be made but I will defeat him by knockout. I will hit him, I will hurt him and I will do damage to him and there will be no rematch”.

Martinez is currently in training camp and his full focus is on Chavez Jr. He is more than confident he will not only defeat Chavez but he will end things in emphatic and decisive fashion.
