Eddy Reynoso respects the role he gets to play in the career of Ryan García.
Still, he is not without his opinion on what he feels is in the best fights to be made for the rising lightweight contender.
Garcia (21-0, 18KOs) has enjoyed a firestorm of publicity in the wake of his 7th round knockout of England’s Luke Campbell on Jan. 2nd, the first major card of the new year. With the win came the interim WBC lightweight title, though Garcia seemed less interested in a shot at Devin Haney’s full title but rather a lucrative Pay-Per-View showdown with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (24-0, 23KOs).
A lot of hype came of the latter matchup before Garcia quickly moved on to another dream fight, a catchweight clash with former eight-division titlist Manny Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39KOs). Rumors intensified of such a fighter after Pacquiao’s plans fell through for a desired showdown with Conor McGregor, who suffered a knockout loss to Dustin Poirier in their UFC rematch last month.
The media has quickly swarmed the developing storyline, although Garcia's team isn’t entirely on board with such a fight.
“I really don’t like that fight,” Reynoso admitted to BoxingScene.com. “Manny Pacquiao has all that experience, it’s a fight at a heavier weight against (a naturally) bigger fighter. But in my role as a teacher, my job is to prepare him for these fights that he and the team accept.
“Yes, he does consult with me just as he does with his adviser, Guadalupe Valencia, and his mother and father. But he respects my opinion when it comes to that, and I give him my opinion on those fights from my perspective and my point of view as a trainer. But the final decision is made by Golden Boy Promotions, by his promoter Oscar de la Hoya. They value my input and take it into consideration and I am pleased with that part of it.”
For what it’s worth, Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez has publicly insisted that the fight won’t happen next. Ideally, that could bring back Garcia to more realistic and still lucrative pairings in his natural weight class.
“The fight I like more is Tank Davis,” insists Reynoso. “To me, it’s a far more interesting fight. They are at the same weight and their fight can exceed expectations.”
Garcia and Davis both generated massive buzz through their respective massive social media following. A mock poster which was published online to the Instagram followers of both unbeaten boxers generated more than 1,000,000 combined likes, while both are proven draws in the ring. Davis further enhanced his growing marketability in a highlight reel 6th round knockout of four division titlist Leo Santa Cruz in their junior lightweight/lightweight two-title fight last Halloween at The Alamodome in San Antonio. The event drew a live gage $1,466,475 from 7,891 tickets while selling a reported 225,000 buys in his debut as a PPV headliner.
“A fight between Ryan Garcia and Tank Davis can be the biggest fight in boxing,” believes Reynoso. “They are two of the biggest stars of this new generation. Manny Pacquiao is great but he’s part of a past generation.
“The young fans of Ryan Garcia and young fans of Gervonta Davis are going to want to see that fight.”
