Junior welterweight Kevin Brown didn’t get the knockout he wanted but left no doubt in his 10-round unanimous victory over Esteuri Suero on Friday night in Orlando, Florida.
The scores were 95-92, 96-91 and 98-89, all for Brown in the main event of a fight at Caribe Royale.
The bout started with Brown, a 31 year old Cuban, who also trains in Las Vegas, showing his craft. By the second round, Brown was methodical with his jab. The third round saw Brown content to counter-punch as the 24-year-old Suero, a Las Vegas based native of the Dominican Republic, continued forward. By the fifth, Brown was now engaging more and throwing more punches. Brown took control of the fight as Suero’s punches lacked the same consequence as earlier rounds. By the sixth, Brown was landing the cleaner punches as the fight continued with both showing a lot of patience.
Brown dropped Suero with a right hand in round nine. The round went from bad to worse for Suero as referee Alicia Collins took a point for holding. A flurry of punches from Brown sent Suero to the canvas for the second time with seconds left in the round. Brown couldn't get the stoppage in the final round as he picked up the victory.
Brown talked about the ninth round in his post-fight interview.
“Just to rely on my training, my physical conditioning, on the instructions of the corner, and just simply the talent level to take over at that point of the fight,” Brown said via translator.
When asked what he wants next, he said, “Any of the top five in the division, let's go. Let's just do it, we're ready.”
Brown improves to 7-0 (3 KOs), and Suero dips to 14-3 (10 KOs).
Brown, who defeated John Bauza in his last fight, came in to the fight with something to prove. He was dropped in May by Idalberto Umara, who lost a fight in the co-feature of the same card.
Suero had been disqualified against Floyd Schofield in 2024 and was looking to show his class both in pedigree and ability to fight in the ring. Suero had fought only once since his disqualification loss.
Brown and Suero were not unfamiliar with one another, having sparred once before.
