Former Team GB heavyweight Leo Atang has signed professional terms with Matchroom Boxing, ahead of his debut later this year.

The 18-year-old, from York, UK, will be trained by Ashley Martin out of Legions Amateur Boxing Club, and managed by former world champion Sunny Edwards.

Atang is a five-time former national champion who captured the World Boxing U-19 world championships in the USA last year.

Atang, a former rugby league winger, stopped a Korean super heavyweight in the final and Matchroom claim to have fended off “stiff competition” to sign the youngster.

“It’s a dream come true to sign with Matchroom,” said Atang. “My team and I have had many good conversations leading to me turning pro. But I knew this one just felt right from the start. It’s what I always hoped for.

We put the work in and we put the hours in. I live the life. My mentality is – push myself the absolute limit and leave no stone unturned. I’m fit, I’m strong and I’ll be ready to go with anyone tomorrow.

“I’ve got what it takes to go to the top of this sport. The future is here.”

Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn said he was excited by the signing having tracked Atang’s rapid rise. He also believes Atang will be suited to the pros.

“Leo possesses all of the attributes to make it to the very top and we can’t wait to get this journey underway,” said Hearn. “Naturally there was a lot of interest in landing the signature of one of the very best prospects in Britain, and we’re delighted that Leo and his team have chosen us to guide his career.”
