You might know of the 6ft 6ins junior middleweight title holder Sebastian Fundora. However, in Los Angeles, Kevin Anton, a 6ft 3ins fighter, is currently drawing comparisons to Fundora.

Anton fights Philadelphia’s Tariq Green in a six-round bout this Saturday at Thunder Studios in Long Beach, California. The bout will be broadcast on ProBox TV.

Anton, the 26-year-old Palmdale, California, is everything most young fighters look to avoid: tall, a southpaw, he knocks people out and he throws a lot of punches. The sight of his frame shrinking naturally draws comparisons to other tall fighters, but, by the end of the year, his team hopes that fighters who are freakishly tall will be getting compared to Anton.

“I would say I do get compared to Fundora a little more recently, because he's the tall fighter that people have their eyes on right now who throws a lot of punches,” Anton told BoxingScene. “I also get compared to the old-school fighters like Paul Williams and sometimes even Thomas Hearns.”

Anton, who turned professional in 2019, has seen his career move slowly; this is only his 10th fight. Yet Anton is candid about how hard it has been to move from a prospect to a contender.

“The struggle, honestly,” Anton, 9-0 (8 KOs), said about his career so far. “As far as the pro ranks, it has always been hard to get more matches on these big platforms. It has always been a struggle. I knew heading into the pros it was going to be like that with my height, the weight, and building my record, that a lot of people won't want to take those chances on.”

That has changed this year. Anton fought in January on a 360 Promotions card on UFC Fight Pass and now he will be on a ProBox TV telecast. Yet, being a tall southpaw with an 88 percent knockout ratio, isn’t the most tantalizing offer. Add to all that the fact that Anton, who is trained and managed by Sam Contreras, had 85 amateur fights with three national titles. Currently he is without a promoter or fight dates. It has become tough to find suitable opponents in his weight class. For this fight, Anton faces Green, 34, a veteran pro with a record of 5-3-2 (3 KOs). Anton hopes to keep his accelerated pace up as he aims to make a name for himself by the end of the year.

“At the beginning of the year I did say that I wanted to be more active, to get more fights and build momentum,” Anton said. "So far, so good. This is my second fight within a month and a half. So, this year is looking very good.”
