DALLAS - Sean Garcia did his part to get the ball rolling for his fighting family.

A laboring effort by the 20-year old was enough to sway two of the three judges to award a majority decision win over Rene Marquez in their four-round lightweight bout.

Judge Michael Mitchell scored the contest 38-38 even, overruled by scores of 39-37 turned in by Javier Martinez and Anthony Moss in favor of Garcia in their DAZN-televised opener Saturday afternoon at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

Garcia normally campaigns as a featherweight, but took this fight at lightweight for the sake of appearing on the same show as older brother—unbeaten lightweight contender Ryan García, who fights in the evening’s main event—for the first time in his young career. The 20-year old southpaw controlled the tempo in the opening round, poking with his jab and coming over the top of Marquez’s guard with his right hook.

Marquez—who vowed to knock out García—put forth his best effort to live up to that promise in round two. A heavy body shot scored for the 31-year old journeyman and college student from Scottbluff, Nebraska. García shook off the blow, connecting with straight left hands while fending off his determined foe.

Garcia grew in confidence in round three, dialed in with his left hand and also hurting Marquez with a right hook. Marquez’s most significant moment came when he tossed García to the canvas midway through the round.

Momentum remained in favor of García for most of round four, much to the delight of the spattering of fans on hand for the first fight of the day.

Marquez ran a 30-second drill down the stretch in his best effort to steal the round and decision, though was for naught as he falls to 5-6 (2KOs). All six career losses have come in his last seven starts.

Garcia advances to 6-0 (2KOs) with the win, his first since an August 2019 undercard appearance in Edinburg, Texas.

Also on the show, Mexico’s Raul Curiel had his way with overmatched countryman Ramses Agaton en route to a 2nd round stoppage win.

Curiel—who is trained by Freddie Roach and Marvin Somodio—dropped Agaton in the opening round, courtesy of a left hook to the body and one up top as a bonus. Agaton beat the count but spent the rest of the round fending off the 25-year old welterweight prospect.

The tide never turned, as Curiel (9-0, 7KOs) applied constant pressure in the next frame. Agaton (22-13-3, 12KOs) was battered to the point of no longer able to defend himself, forcing referee Rosario Solis to stop the contest at 1:16 of round two.

The bout aired live on DAZN, in supporting capacity to the interim lightweight title fight between Ryan García (20-0, 17KOs) and England’s Luke Campbell (20-3, 16KOs).
