The WBO’s latest ratings update – released February 26 – includes the installation of six new No. 1 contenders.
At heavyweight: The February 22 card in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, led to a shakeup of the WBO’s heavyweight rankings.
Zhilei Zhang (previously No. 1) lost to Agit Kabayel. Martin Bakole (previously No. 2) came in as a very late replacement and was stopped by Joseph Parker. Kabayel, by beating Zhang, won the WBC’s interim heavyweight title and therefore exited the WBO’s rankings.
All of which led to Justis Huni moving from No. 4 to No. 1, followed by upgrades for Moses Itauma (now No. 2) and Fabio Wardley (now No. 3), while Zhang has dropped to No. 4.
Oleksandr Usyk has the WBO heavyweight title, as well as the WBA and WBC belts. Parker remains the WBO interim titleholder.
At light heavyweight: The main event on February 22 saw Dmitry Bivol win his rematch, and the undisputed light heavyweight championship, with a majority decision over Artur Beterbiev. Bivol was previously No. 1, a position that now belongs to Beterbiev.
The WBO’s new interim titleholder is Callum Smith, who defeated Joshua Buatsi for that belt on the undercard. Buatsi is now ranked No. 4.
At welterweight: Shakhram Giyasov dropped for some reason from No. 1 to No. 3. That allowed Alexis Rocha, previously No. 2, to move up to No. 1. Rocha fought in December, settling for a draw with Raul Curiel (currently ranked No. 15).
The WBO welterweight titleholder is Brian Norman Jnr.
At junior welterweight: On February 15, Arnold Barboza (previously No. 1) defeated Jack Catterall (previously No. 2) for the WBO’s interim title at 140lbs. With the top spot vacant and Catterall dropping to No. 3, Alfredo Santiago moved up from No. 3 to No. 1.
The WBO and lineal welterweight champion is Teofimo Lopez.
At lightweight: Keyshawn Davis, previously ranked No. 1, dethroned Denys Berinchyk on February 14 for the WBO title. That meant Davis’ Top Rank stablemate, Raymond Muratalla, moved up from No. 2 to No. 1.
However, that may not last long if Muratalla moves forward with a fight against Zaur Abdullaev for the IBF’s interim title; fighters tend to be dropped from the rankings if they compete for another sanctioning body’s belt.
Berinchyk is now ranked No. 5.
At junior featherweight: Sam Goodman was dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 after twice suffering cuts and having to pull out of fights with Naoya Inoue, who holds all four world titles at 122lbs. That allowed Carl Jammes Martin to move from No. 2 to No. 1.
The WBO’s titleholders and No. 1 contenders in each weight class are:
