Results of today's Switzerland card from the PostFinance Arena in Berne, Switzerland, featuring a WBC heavyweight title defense by Vitali Klitschko, against challenger Kevin Johnson, will be posted right here. For those who are planning to watch the tape-delayed version on HBO broadcast tonight - I would advise that you do not read this particular post. Results and details will be posted as they come in.
In the main event, WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (39-2, 37KOs) won an easy twelve round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Kevin Johnson (22-1, 9KOs). The scores were 120-108, 119-109 and 120-108.
Klitschko come out strong at the start, stalking and pushing Johnson back. Johnson didn't seem to have any answers. He allowed Klitschko to back him up to the ropes and unload with power punches. Johnson was slipping some shots but missing his counters. He did more taunting than fighting which wasn't exactly scoring points with the crowd. After four rounds the fight was following the same pattern with Klitschko backing Johnson up and unloading with combinations. Johnson wasn't doing much of anything other than throwing a jab here and there.
Johnson began to get even more defensive in the fifth and sixth rounds. He never came out of his shell and stayed closed up. Klitschko started landing more often in the seventh but not with anything deadly enough to put Johnson away. Johnson managed to roll with many of the punches. He had a bad habit during all of the rounds of ducking his head down as if he was inviting a Klitschko punch to the back of the head.
The final few rounds was more of the same. Johnson appeared to be more interested in going the distance than winning. He did little as far as punching was concerned and Klitschko landed in spurts and had very little to worry about. Johnson did a lot of taunting. More taunting than fighting.
At the final bell, there were no hugs. The two fighters had to pulled apart as they continued to jaw at each other after the final bell. Younger brother Wladimir Klitschko tried to calm Johnson down, but Johnson became upset with Wladimir. The situation quickly calmed down.
Heavyweight prospect Alexander Ustinov (19-0, 15KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over veteran Monte Barrett (34-9, 20KOs). After knocking Barrett down and hurting him bad in the first, the fight appeared to be on the verge of ending early. Barrett managed to hang on in a very lackluster fight until the very end. Ustinov controlled a lot of spots with his long jab but it certainly was an ugly fight to watch with a lot of holding and two tired fighters in the late rounds.
In a heavyweight contest, former cruiserweight contender, Johnathon Banks (23-1, 16KOs) stopped Marcel Zeller (22-6, 21KOs) in the first round. Banks' third fight at heavyweight since being stopped by then cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek in February.
Cruiserweight contender Nuri Seferi (25-6, 17KOs) won a four round unanimous decision over Joseph Marwa (22-13, 6KOs). Seferi's fourth win in a row since losing a decision to Herbie Hide last July.
