Former unified light heavyweight titleholder and once-feared Sergey Kovalev will make his final fight April 19 in Chelyabinsk, Russia, as part of an IBA Champions Night tournament.
Kovalev, 35-5-1 (29 KOs), will take on Germany’s Artur Mann, 22-4 (13 KOs), in a 10-round bout.
Kovalev, a 41-year-old Russian based out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was last seen May 18 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, when he lost to unbeaten U.S.-based Swede Robin Safar. Kovalev didn't look good and was floored in the final round.
However, some 10 years ago "Krusher" was at the top of his game, beating the likes of Jean Pascal (twice), Bernard Hopkins and Isaac Chilemba. But then came back-to-back losses to Andre Ward, after which Kovalev was never quite the same. Since losing to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in 2019, he has fought just twice.
Mann, a 34-year-old who is originally from Kazakhstan, has previously lost to Kevin Lerena and Mairis Briedis in world title challengers. Most recently, he scored a seventh-round knockout of Ion Mihai Desrobitu in November.
