Sebastian Fundora spoke to BoxingScene’s Lance Pugmire ahead of the upcoming defense of his WBC and WBO junior middleweight titles against Chordale Booker in a wide-ranging interview.
Fundora’s size – he is six feet, five-and-a-half inches tall – is a topic of conversation every time his fights come up. Sporting an imposing 80-inch reach, Fundora figures to be a fighter who would jab at range and pop his opponent with straight shots as they fought to get inside the stick – say, the Skye Nicolson playbook. Instead, Fundora often likes to brawl at close range. That strategy has brought him to a 21-1-1 (13 KOs) record, as well as the unified junior middleweight title.
Asked by Pugmire how best to make use of his physical gifts, Fundora referred to his training: “My dad trains me very well, and I just have to listen to what my father says.” He indicated that how he fights could depend on his mood: “do I feel like banging, or do I feel like boxing at distance?”
Fundora also shed some light on negotiations to fight Errol Spence – or lack thereof.
“It would have been great,” he said. “But, you know, I saw him in the ring last March. I saw him that one time. We said, ‘let’s fight each other.’ And I never spoke to him again. So these talks [were] ideas, but it never came to fruition. It’s just an idea. And of course the fanbase, or social media, is gonna make it bigger than it is. But it was just that.
“Everything he’s going through now, I wish him well,” Fundora said of Spence.
Sebastian isn’t the only Fundora who is prospering in the fight game – his sister, Gabriela, scored a huge stoppage of Gabriela Celeste Alaniz in November to unify three flyweight world titles.
“We feed off each other,” Sebastian told Pugmire. “Her wins are my wins, my wins are her wins. Seeing her win last fall, the undisputed title, it was great for the Fundora family. Now it’s my turn to put on a great show as well.
“We wanna make the Fundora name a household name.”
