Robert Garcia has enjoyed more than his full share of honors both as a boxer and head trainer. He now has one more title to proudly add to his collection: Ambassador.
The former 130-pound titlist and current A-list cornerman has been appointed by adidas boxing as its ambassador, the company announced on Monday. The renowned trainer to more than a dozen former and current world champions—including pound-for-pound entrant and younger brother Mikey Garcia, and undefeated, unified 140-pound titlist Jose Carlos Ramirez—has granted his Robert Garcia Boxing Academy facility in Riverside, Calif. to serve as the testing gym for all adidas boxing equipment.
“I’m excited to join the adidas boxing and combat sports team,” said Garcia, a former super featherweight champion during his boxing career and 2012 Trainer of the Year. “Since I started the Robert Garcia Boxing Academy I’ve held a high standard with my fighters to work hard, train hard and be smart about their careers.
“The adidas pro boxing line is the perfect complement to my training program and I’m very happy to feature their gloves and equipment here. To be anadidas training and testing gym is a plus for everyone as we can have our professional and amateur fighters try out the extensive line of training gear – from gloves to bags to equipment. I’m a believer in their high standards and commitment thatadidas brings to their boxing line.”
Garcia’s boxing laboratory—which opened in Riverside, Calif. in 2015 after having previously trained boxers out of his old Oxnard facility—has already launched the adidas Pro Line of boxing gear, including fight night and sparring gloves, heavy and speed bags, mitts, boots and other ring gear.
As the brand has already established four pairs of fight gloves that are commission-approved, it became important to align the product with a world-class boxing figure. The selection of Garcia, in that regard, became a no-brainer.
“We are thrilled to have Robert Garcia – one of the top trainers in the boxing business – as an adidas ambassador and for his gym to be an adidas product development hub,” said Christophe Dessalles, managing director of adidas boxing and Double-D Sports. “We are obsessed with helping athletes make a difference, and by having Robert on board we are doing just that.
“His professionalism, knowledge and coaching has led him from being a World Champion boxer himself to be a World Champion Boxing trainer. His ability to shape the future of the sport is exactly why we wanted him as an adidas trainer and gym.”
