Muhammad Ali’s grandson got off to an impressive start Saturday night to his professional boxing career.
Nico Ali Walsh faced a very limited opponent in his pro debut, but he handled Jordan Weeks accordingly. The 21-year-old Ali Walsh scored a knockdown and stopped Weeks in the first round of a super middleweight match that was scheduled for four rounds in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Referee Gerald Ritter stopped the action 1:49 into the opening round. Weeks was still standing when their fight ended.
ESPN televised Ali Walsh’s highly publicized pro debut as part of the Joshua Franco-Andrew Moloney undercard from Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.
Ali Walsh, a Las Vegas resident who didn’t have an extensive amateur background, became the second straight opponent to knock out Walsh (4-2, 2 KOs), of Lexington, South Carolina.
Ali Walsh drilled Weeks with two right hands and a left hook barely 30 seconds into their bout. Another right hand by Ali Walsh made Weeks touch the canvas with both gloves 1:11 into the first round.
That counted as a knockdown. Weeks smiled as he returned to an upright position, but he couldn’t take Ali Walsh’s power much longer. He wobbled Weeks with another right hand just after the halfway point of the first round.
Ali Walsh went after a weakened Weeks and Ritter halted the action soon thereafter because Weeks couldn’t defend himself.
