Former two division world champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28KOs) hopes to return on a date in July and then have one more fight in September, according to his older brother and head trainer Robert Garcia.
Mikey has been inactive since January 2014, when he won a twelve round unanimous decision over Juan Carlos Burgos in New York City.
The 28-year-old boxer has been fighting to break a promotional contract with Top Rank. They recently reached an agreement where Garcia became a free agent.
Garcia has yet to make a decision regarding his promotional status and may fight under a banner being created by the Garcia family, Garcia Boxing Promotions
The Garcia clan met with Floyd Mayweather Jr. last week. Mayweather is very interested in signing Mikey to Mayweather Promotions.
"With Mayweather we just went to a show that he had and watched the fights. We went for a walk and dinner, but that was it because I had to return to California because Saul Rodriguez was going to fight. We didn't discuss anything about business It was more of an invitation to meet up," Robert told ESPN Deportes.
"We must find something soon [in terms of a return date]. Hopefully a promoter that we know will do us a favor and place us in a slot.... maybe even this coming July because we want to establish a rhythm, and then come back again in September."
"We have to be very careful with Mikey. We do not want to get another contract like the one that he had with Top Rank. I think we're going to have to do something to fight under a promotional company that we're going to start ourselves."
