Liam Cameron’s life has changed for the better since his controversial draw with growing star Ben Whittaker last October.
Whittaker was heavily favored to dispatch of Cameron with relative ease heading into the contest, but the experienced Cameron turned out to be a tough night’s work. Whittaker started brightly but Cameron’s constant pressure and body shots caused Whittaker to fade.
Cameron started to land more and more telling shots in the fifth and the contest seemed to be heading in his direction. Drama struck as the fifth came to a close; the pair came together in a clinch and fell over the top rope, landing in a heap on the canvas below.
Whittaker sustained an injury to his right ankle during the fall and could not continue. This meant the fight headed to the scorecards for a technical decision, with it being ruled a split decision draw.
Whittaker was the victim of abuse online after the incident with many accusing him of faking an injury to take the easy way out of the contest.
“He grabbed me, pulled me over, and that's all she wrote,” Cameron told BoxingScene regarding the incident. “He swung his head back and nearly broke my head. I heard, ‘Stay down Ben, you don't want to continue,’ [when he was on the floor].”
The controversial end to their first encounter has only wet the appetite for a rematch and the pair will finally square off this Sunday at the BP Live in Birmingham, England.
But what version of Whittaker is Cameron expecting this time around?
“A very good one, because that's all I can expect,” he said. “Anything less than that is a bonus to me. He still can improve, but might not be this quick.”
One would struggle to recognize Cameron today from the one that faced Whittaker in Riyadh last year. The 34 year old has changed his appearance courtesy of the money earned out in Saudi Arabia, and plans on changing his life further with a win on Sunday night.
“[My life has changed] massively, and it's going to change even more,” Cameron said. “Birmingham Live, it's mad to see my face, mad. Another big massive paycheck. I’ll be having cars and yachts and everything I'm already missing.”
Cameron, however, insists the money has not changed him deep inside.
“I bought some £30 Under Armour running trainers the other day, I'm still a tight fucker,” he joked.
