Jaron “Boots” Ennis and Eimantas Stanionis both made the 147lbs weight limit ahead of their April 12 unification bout.
Ennis’ move north to 154lbs has been speculated for a while, and he evidently felt apprehensive enough about the weight cut this time around to employ a nutritionist. Still, he made weight with perhaps more margin than expected, at 146.4lbs – in fact, more margin than Stanionis, who came in at 146.8.
The fight figures to be the most defining of each man’s career so far, with Ennis putting his IBF title on the line and Stanionis wagering his WBA strap. Ennis is the younger man at 27 and boasts a record of 33-0 (29 KOs), but is coming off an underwhelming performance in a pointless rematch with Karen Chukhadzhian. Stanionis, 15-0 (9 KOs), has not fought in nearly a year but seeks to take on the best available opposition at age 30.
The biggest shock of the ceremonial weigh-in was Franco Ocampo coming in significantly overweight, at 153lbs, for his welterweight clash with Shakhram Giyasov. Giyasov is the mandatory for Stanionis' WBA title. With Ocampo's misstep, his chance of inheriting an opportunity to fight the winner of the main event should be beat Giyasov is minimized.
