ANAHEIM - Welterweight Alejandro Reyes of Los Angeles improved to 5-0, 4 KOs by stopping Nicaragua's Osmel Mayorga in round 2.
Reyes landed the more-telling punches throughout the fight, stunning Mayorga a handful of times. Reyes did the most damage in round 2, battering Mayorga and forcing him to fight off his back foot.
About a minute into round 2, a combination to the head stunned Mayorga, prompting Reyes to move in to finish him. Mayorga held onto Reyes, and as referee Eddie Hernandez attempted to break them apart, Reyes attempted to throw punches, prompting Hernandez to admonish him. Moments later, as the action resumed, a combination to the head hurt Mayorga, prompting Hernandez to stop the fight at 1:24.
Mayorga (2-3, 1 KO) has now lost his last three fights, all by knockout.
Junior lightweight Jorge Chavez was successful in his professional debut, stopping Mexico City's Gilberto Aguilar (0-4) in round 3.
Chavez, who resides in San Diego, was the aggressor from the opening bell, putting Aguilar on the defensive. Aguilar was game, but was limited in his offense, leaving himself open to get countered often by the more-accurate Chavez. Late in round 2, Chavez stunned Aguilar with a combination to the head. Fighting off the ropes, Aguilar traded combinations with Chavez until the bell sounded to end the round.
About a minute into round 3, a barrage of punches stunned Aguilar, who backed up against the ropes. Chavez went in for the kill, battering Aguilar, who was fighting back, but took several punches to the head. Referee Thomas Taylor saw enough and stopped the bout at 1:24.
Amateur standout and junior featherweight Asa Stevens made quick work of Felix Vazquez of San Diego at 1:59 of the opening round. Stevens (2-0, 1 knockout), who resides in Waianane, Hawai'i was in control of the action from the opening bell. A series of punches to the body backed Vazquez to a corner where Stevens continued to punish him. Referee Eddie Hernandez saw enough and waved the fight off at 1:59.
Tonight's Golden Boy Promotions card will be headlined by unbeaten middleweight contender Jaime Munguia (37-0, 30 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico squaring off against Philadelphia's Gabriel Rosado (26-13-1, 15 KOs) in a 12-round bout. Four fights will stream live on DAZN, which will begin at 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT.
