George Kambosos Jnr and Jake Wyllie on Friday cleared the final hurdle for their domestic showdown Saturday night in Sydney, Australia, making the weight for their 12-round junior welterweight fight.
The former undisputed lightweight champion Kambosos came in at 139.3lbs, while Wyllie was slightly heavier at 139.5lbs. Kambosos, 21-3 (10 KOs), will be fighting in his hometown of Sydney – at Qudos Bank Arena – for the first time since his 2016 decision win over Brandon Ogilvie. The 31-year-old Kambosos is looking to build momentum in his career after losing three of his past four fights, though all three defeats came against top quality in Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko.
“The weight cut was amazing – I’m ready to make a statement out of him,” said Kambosos. “Like I said, I respect the kid, I don’t want to disrespect him. But tomorrow – for all you ones disrespecting me – I’m gonna make a fucking statement out of him tomorrow because of you guys.”
The 24-year-old Wyllie, 16-1 (15 KOs), of Warwick in Queensland, Australia, is stepping way up in competition, having fought only at the domestic level in his nearly five years as a professional. Wyllie accepted the fight on less than a week’s notice after the original opponent, Indonesian veteran Daud Yordan, withdrew due to medical reasons.
“This is massive. This could change my life,” said Wyllie, the current Australian junior welterweight titleholder. “I’m more than ready and focused, and I’m gonna get through George Kambosos tomorrow night.”
The card, which airs live on DAZN, will also feature two more women’s world title fights.
In the 10-round co-main event, Skye Nicolson, 12-0 (1 KO), will make the third defense of her WBC featherweight belt against Tiara Brown, 18-0 (11 KOs). Nicolson, 29, of Yatala, Queensland, Australia, weighed 125.9lbs, while Brown, 36, of Lehigh Acres, Florida, weighed 124.6lbs.
In the other championship fight, Cherneka Johnson, 16-2 (6 KOs), of Melbourne, Australia, will defend her WBA bantamweight title against the fighter she defeated by majority decision last May to lift the belt, Nina Hughes, 6-1 (2 KOs), of Billericay, England.
Johnson and Hughes both weighed 117.3lbs
