Canelo Alvarez’s quest in adding a light heavyweight crown and becoming a four-division champion could be short lived in the 175-pound division.
Alvarez said Wednesday be plans to drop the 15 pounds he’ll add on and return back to middleweight after his Nov. 2 fight against Sergey Kovalev in Las Vegas.
“My intention is to return to 160 pounds, but it’s difficult when you go up, and then to go back down. With discipline and diet, anything is possible,” said Alvarez. “You need to take risks in order to make history, and I’m willing and happy to do it. [Kovalev] will be one of the most difficult fights of my career. I want to be an active champion across three divisions. I am motivated by every challenge that I take.”
Once Alvarez returns to middleweight, he’s made it clear that he has no intentions of fighting Gennady Golovkin a third time even though Oscar De La Hoya has said a trilogy will occur in 2020. DAZN, Alvarez’s streaming service partner, has echoed the same sentiment about procuring a third installment with the Kazakh fighter.
Alvarez went as far as shooting down Golovkin as an opponent, saying, “for me, yes, we are finished” while also adding that Golovkin doesn’t “represent a challenge that I haven’t had.”
When asked who he’d like to fight instead in 2020, Alvarez didn’t offer a particular opponent.
“I don’t really have in mind any specific fighter,” he said. “Whoever will be the best challenge for me, [I’ll fight him]. I never imagined fighting Kovalev, and here I am … I have the ability and experience. Once you get in the ring, you never know.”
