Ben Whittaker believes that Liam Cameron had his one and only chance to beat him back in October.
The pair first squared off in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Whittaker was expected to deal with Cameron pretty easily. However, things did not go to plan, and Whittaker looked as though he was struggling with the pace and unable to keep Cameron off of him.
Cameron, an experienced domestic fighter, targeted the body and, after sinking in some heavy shots to Whittaker’s midsection late in round 5, the pair came together and tumbled over the top rope. Whittaker injured himself in the fall and was unable to continue with the contest.
The fight headed to the scorecards and was ruled a split decision draw, which caused some controversy. Many felt the contest was heading in Cameron’s favor and many also questioned whether Whittaker’s injuries were real.
The pair will now face each other again this Sunday at Birmingham’s BP Pulse Live in a highly anticipated rematch. Ahead of it Whittaker was asked if he believes that the first contest represented Cameron’s best shot at beating him.
“One hundred per cent. I think that was his one chance and he's run off with it,” Whittaker told BoxingScene. “He’s got his new followers, he's got his new proclaimed fame, and he's going to get a rematch and get paid again. Where really and truly, if I turned up the way I should have, none of this would be happening.
“And I don't like to talk about people like this, but you wouldn't have been speaking about him again. He'd probably be on someone's undercard against another prospect, he'd lose and sadly go on into the distance. But fair play, the bizarre thing happened and he's made a bit of a name from it. But we just had to end that.”
Cameron has been vocal in the build up to the rematch, suggesting that the only reason Whittaker has taken this fight is because he has been forced into it.
“Definitely not, at the end of the day, it's on Sky, on BOXXER,” said Whittaker. “I had the say, really. I'm not trying to be big-headed. I even picked the name: “Resurgence.” This is my show, man. But at the end of the day, there were so many options I could have went down. But me, as the person I am, it's what I wanted and it’s given them another payday.
“I'm a competitor. It's the fight I wanted. It was the fight at the right time and it was hot now. If we left it too long, we'd probably get forgotten about. So for me, yeah, let's bring it back.”
