LAS VEGAS – Duke Ragan scored a knockdown and otherwise out-worked Sebastian Gutierrez to remain unbeaten Saturday night.
Cincinnati’s Ragan won all four rounds of their featherweight fight, according to each of the three judges. Adalaide Byrd, Tim Cheatham and Benoit Roussel each scored their fight 40-35 on the Terence Crawford-Kell Brook undercard at MGM Grand Conference Center.
Ragan’s right hand to the top of Gutierrez’s head sent Gutierrez into a squatting position in the second round and caused his left glove to briefly touch the canvas. Referee Robert Hoyle counted that as a knockdown and enabled Ragan to build on his widening lead.
Ragan, a highly decorated amateur from Cincinnati, improved to 3-0. Gutierrez, of Ventura, California, slipped to 1-1.
In the previous bout, Australian bantamweight prospect Vegas Larfield dropped Juan Alberto Flores twice and stopped him in the third round of their scheduled four-rounder. Referee Celestino Ruiz stopped the action at 1:07 of the third round.
The 18-year-old Larfield (2-0, 2 KOs) and Mexico’s Flores (2-1-1, 0 KOs) traded hard shots to the head and body throughout the second round.
Larfield wasted little time demolishing Flores in the third round, though.
Larfield’s left hook dropped Flores just 15 seconds into the third round. Flores fought on, but a straight right to the middle of his face floored him a second time, just 22 seconds after the first knockdown.
Flores reached his feet again, but Larfield hit him with a barrage of punches that knocked Flores into the ropes. Ruiz quickly stepped in to stop the action at that point.
In the first fight Saturday night, Raymond Muratalla continued the strong start to his professional career.
The lightweight prospect knocked down Luis Porozo twice during the third round. The second knockdown caused Hoyle to quickly stop the action at 2:40 of that third round.
Muratalla landed a left to Porozo’s body that sent him to one knee with 1:10 to go in the third round. Porozo spit out his mouthpiece to try to buy some time, but he couldn’t fend off Muratalla once the action continued.
Muratalla nailed Porozo with a straight right hand that sent Porozo to the canvas a second time and ended their scheduled six-rounder.
The 23-year-old Muratalla (11-0, 9 KOs), of Fontana, California, won a sixth straight bout by knockout. Porozo (15-5, 8 KOs), of Santo Domingo, Ecuador, lost by knockout for just the second time in 20 professional fights.
