Former two-division champion Marlon Tapales and Indonesian challenger Jon Jon Jet both came in under the junior featherweight limit for their 10-round fight in General Santos City, Philippines on Sunday.
Tapales, 39-4 (20 KOs), came in at 121.2lbs, while Jet, 15-1-1 (12 KOs), came in slightly heavier at 121.4lbs for the fight, which will take place at Venue 88 in the city known as “The Tuna Capital of the World.”
Tapales, a former WBO bantamweight and IBF/WBA junior featherweight titleholder, is looking to score his third straight win since his 10th round knockout loss to Naoya Inoue in 2023 for the undisputed championship.
Tapales, of nearby Lanao del Norte province in the Philippines, is getting an unexpected home fight after this bout, which was originally scheduled for Cambodia but was moved to the Philippines after the local promoting partner backed out, says Sanman Boxing CEO Jim Claude Manangquil.
Jet, whose real name is Yohanis Mau Fatin, hails from Indonesia, is taking a significant step-up in competition. The 30-year-old has won five straight since suffering a first-round stoppage loss to Luke Boyd in Australia in 2019, followed by a split draw to Flasidus Nuno in 2021.
Tapales remains highly rated in the 122lbs division, as he’s rated No. 3 by the IBF, No. 2 by the WBC and No. 5 by the WBA.
Manangquil believes that Inoue will move up to 126lbs after Inoue faces Ramon Cardenas next month and, should he win, Murodjon Akhmadaliev in September. That would free Tapales up for another run at a world title at 122lbs.
“We just need to keep him active,” said Manangquil. “But, yes, hopefully, next would be a big fight.”
Tapales-Jet will headline a show that won’t be aired by any broadcaster, but is available to watch live on the Sanman Boxing Facebook page, beginning at 5pm local time.
In the 10-round co-main event, Joey Canoy, 23-5-2 (14 KOs), came in at 104.2lbs for his fight against Vietnam’s Minh Phat Sam, 10-5 (8 KOs), who weighed 104.8lbs.
