Tom Loeffler of GGG Promotions has no doubt that Gennadiy Golovkin (39-1-1 35 KOs) should still be an undefeated fighter.
Golovkin lost a close twelve round majority decision in September 2018 to Canelo Alvarez at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Between suffering that loss, and being stripped of the IBF title, Golovkin became a beltless fighter at the start of 2019.
But all of that might change on October 5th at Madison Square Garden in New York City, when Golovkin faces once-beaten Sergiy Derevyanchenko (13-1 10 KOs).
Golovkin will have the opportunity to reclaim one of his belts, as the vacant IBF world title will be at stake.
“He had that historic championship run. We’re looking forward to him winning the IBF title on October 5 to start another championship run in the middleweight division. He hasn’t lost a fight in the ring; he might have lost on the scorecards, but we’re not looking back at that. We’re looking forward. He’s looking forward to Derevyanchenko,” Loeffler said.
Derevyanchenko has a single loss on his record, when he dropped a twelve round decision to Daniel Jacobs in 2018. Golovkin holds a close twelve round decision victory over Jacobs from 2017.
Golovkin is very familiar with Derevyanchenko from the amateur days, when they were both top prospects and Olympians for their respective countries.
“I have the best opponent, Sergiy,” Golovkin said. I’ve known him for a long time and he’s a very good fighter. This is a real fight. I’m a little bit scared because he’s good. I know his team is very strong. And I’m scared because he looks good. He looks strong. He feels it’s his time right now. Maybe – this is boxing, nobody knows. So if you want to watch a real show, a real fight, come to MSG on October 5 or watch live on DAZN.”
