With each passing day, a fight between Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford seems to be a farfetched thought.
Spence was sitting ringside in San Antonio on Saturday for the Canelo Alvarez versus Callum Smith fight at the Alamodome when DAZN commentator Chris Mannix pulled the unified WBC and IBF welterweight champion aside for an on-screen interview.
Shortly after Spence shared his thoughts on returning to form earlier this month with a unanimous decision win over Danny Garcia, the conversation turned to the 147-pounds star’s immediate plans for 2021, and if he intends on fighting the Nebraska native Crawford.
“I think it could happen. We have to see how it goes,” Spence said. “Al Haymon and Bob Arum need to sit down, and for Bob to stop lying. We'll see. It definitely could happen next year. We just have to sit down and talk and go over the numbers and things like that. I'm the big dog in the welterweight division. He has to take a back seat and take that 60-40 or 70-30. Whatever we give him ... Like I said, I can go up to 160 and fight Canelo Alvarez.”
The disparity and gap in purses is widening further by the day for Spence. He’d initially shared that a 60-40 split would be appropriate to fight the WBO welterweight titlist, but he’s now considerably upping the ante.
“And they said it was me,” Crawford tweeted with a shrugging emoji shortly after the interview aired. “I rest my case now, on to the next. That chapter is now closed.”
Both fighters have been throwing jabs at each other whenever the subject of a future super fight has been broached, but ultimately the onus falls on Haymon and Arum to strike a deal that will be considered fair for both fighters.
Crawford is under contract with Top Rank until October, and his relationship with the promotional company has been frosty of late. The tumult spilled into the public once Crawford and Arum threw shots at each other in the media shortly after Crawford dispensed Kell Brook last month.
Haymon could very well poach the pound for pound star when he’s a potential free agent and make the fight in house under the PBC banner.
However it happens, Spence will have to reconsider his 70-30 stance.
