Danny Garcia was buzzed early and responded by landing just 10 of 33 punches per round over the first nine rounds. As Keith Thurman took his foot of the gas in rounds nine through twelve (six power landed per round over last three after landing 9 per round in previous nine), Garcia upped the pace, landing an average of 13 of 46 total punches. Overall, Thurman threw and landed more punches in eight of twelve rounds and landed the harder punches in the fight.

Thurman beat Garcia by split decision to unify welterweight titles at the Barclays Center in New York.

Thurman added the WBC crown to his WBA belt when winning his 28th straight fight and handing Garcia his first loss in 34 bouts.

Thurman won with scores of 116-112 and 115-113 on two of the judges' cards, while Garcia was ahead on the other with a 115-113 advantage.

Thurman now owns two of the four welterweight belts with the other two being held by Britain's Kell Brook and Manny Pacquiao.

Brook is scheduled to defend his IBF title against America's Errol Spence in Sheffield on a date in late May or early June, with Pacquiao's WBO belt on the line when he defends in a tentative fight against Amir Khan - with no finalized date at the moment.
