Jonathan “Bomba” Gonzalez, the World Boxing Organization world champion at 108 pounds, will balance the alternatives that arise before deciding his future in 2023.

Earlier this month in Japan, Gonzalez retained his title with an impressive win over Shokichi Iwata by unanimous decision.

One possible option is to move up a division and the other would be to unify belts with Kenshiro Teraji who on the same card knocked out Hiroto Kyoguchi to unify the WBC and WBA titles.

“I have options. I don't know what will happen,” said González to Carlos Gonzalez. "I have to wait for what the WBO says in case I have to comply with the mandatory defense or the opportunity to unify titles arises."

González ventured up to fight at 112 pounds in 2019, when he traveled to Japan to challenge Kosei Tanaka for the WBO crown and lost by technical knockout. In the aftermath of that loss, he dropped to 108.

“This is a business and everything will depend on how things go. I can still make 108 pounds, but I am already 31 years old and I have sacrificed myself to continue at this weight,” Gonzalez said.

González is clear that it will not be until April or May for his next ring return.

“It is not yet known against whom the mandatory would be or if the WBO will order one. There may be someone ranked at one, but it's not necessarily the mandatory challenger,” Gonzalez explained.

Regarding his performance against Iwata, González confirmed that he is more than pleased with the result.

“It was a tough fight. Iwata is a very hungry young lad, but he doesn't have the experience to be at this level. I have no doubt that in the future he will be world champion. A lot of people doubted [my ability to win], because they know it's hard to win a decision in Japan. I'm not the type of boxer who can knock someone out with one punch," Gonzalez said.
