A devastated Manny Pacquiao insists he believes he had beaten Floyd Mayweather despite judges awarding a unanimous points win to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the richest fight in history on Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Pacquiao, 36, said after the superfight he felt he had done enough to be awarded the decision against Mayweather, who cemented his place in the pantheon of boxing greats with a defensive masterclass.
“It was a good fight. I thought I won the fight. He didn’t do nothing. He was always moving outside. I got him many times. I saw his punches,” Pacquiao said. “He was moving around too much, it wasn’t easy throwing punches at him. If he would’ve stayed in one place, then I could have thrown punches. I was cutting him (off) and countering. I wanted to fight.”
Not many people agree with Pacquiao's position, but former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield is one of the few who saw the Filipino star as the victor.
“Well, I actually thought he did [win the fight]. The fact of the matter is you are the most aggressive one, you hitting him with shots. He was the one blocking shots. Pacquiao seemed to hit him more times than he hit Pacquiao. Didn’t nobody hurt each other real bad but the fact of the matter is if don’t nobody hurt each other bad and one guy is throwing the most punches, then how do you score the card?,” Holyfield told ESPN.
But CompuBox tallied up the punches and found that Mayweather had actually thrown more punches than Pacquiao.
