Flyweight Gabriela Fundora remained unbeaten Thursday night, defeating Tania Garcia Hernandez by unanimous decision at the Sala de Armas in Mexico City.
Scores were 97-93, 97-93, and 98-92 for Fundora, who improved to 10-0 1 NC, 4 knockouts.
Fundora, who resides in Coachella, California, was the more-effective fighter throughout most of the fight. Garcia was game, closing the distance and attacking the body of the taller Fundora. Despite Garcia’s aggressiveness, Fundora was the more-polished fighter of the two, successfully landing counter hooks or combinations to the head.
With the win, Fundora won the WBC Youth Female flyweight title.
The 20-year-old was coming off a unanimous decision victory over Naomi Arellano Reyes in her last bout on October 8. She fought on the same card as older brother, junior middleweight contender Sebastian Fundora, who defeated Carlos Ocampo by decision to also remain unbeaten.
Both Sebastian and Gabriela are promoted by Sampson Lewkowicz.
Fundora has mostly fought in both the United States and Mexico. Thursday marked her sixth fight in Mexico in a pro career that began in May 2021.
Garcia, who resides in nearby Tultitlan, drops to 7-7-2. She fought to a split-decision draw against Silvia Torres in her previous fight on July 23.
The Fundora-Garcia fight headlined a ‘Noche de Box’ card, which will be promoted by LC Promotions
