In his first bout since losing an upset decision last November to Victor Terrazas, former three division world champion Fernando Montiel (47-5-2, 37KOs) knocked out Indonesian Angky Angkota (25-7, 14KOs) in the ninth round of a rugged bout in Mazatlan, Sinaloa. Montiel, who turned 33-years-old on Thursday, was hoping to get a birthday knockout.
The knockout came at 2:32 of the ninth round after he dropped Angkota with a hard left hand.
"Tonight I showed that I am back. And to all of the people who believed in me, I want to tell you that we're once again going after the big fights. I hope that later this year I will get a world title opportunity and capture the fourth title that we both desire," Montiel said.
