Former UFC two division champion Daniel Cormier is holding his nose at the recent talk of a potential fight between career rival Jon Jones and former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.
In a recent interview, former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson gave his take on the escalating drama between the UFC and some of their top fighters - specifically Jones.
As BoxingScene.com previously reported, Tyson explained that while UFC is getting higher ratings at the moment, their fighters will never make more money than top level boxers - citing Conor McGregor's decision to cross over to boxing in 2017, to earn by far his biggest purse against Floyd Mayweather.
“Listen to this, UFC is more popular than boxing, right? Higher ratings, right?. But a UFC fighter will never be richer than a first-class fighter. To make a $100 million, Conor McGregor had to fight Floyd Mayweather. Jon Jones got to fight me if he wants to make some super money,” Tyson said to Charlie Mack.
Jones became aware of Tyson's statements, and responded to former champion with a two-fight offer. He's willing to face the 53-year-old Tyson in a boxing match - if Tyson is willing to fight him under UFC rules.
“I’m listening Mike Tyson. I’ll box you in the ring if you promise to give me a real fight in the octagon afterwards. And because I respect you so much, I promise I won’t break anything on you,” stated Jones.
Cormier believes the idea of Jones vs. Tyson is so absurd that it's not even worth entertaining.
“Really? That’s crazy. It’s odd. Even hearing that it’s kinda odd. Like even hearing the whole interaction between the two is odd, so I’m just gonna ignore it. No sell. You know how they say you no-sold something? I’m no-selling this thing. I’m no-selling this thing right into the garbage can [laughs]," Cormier told ESPN.
“I think Mike was just talking. Mike’s just talking. Look man, I think when you’re in front of a camera like that and you’re just doing these things, like sometimes you just talk. And you’re just talking and talking and talking. And I think that’s one of those times where Mike was just talking. The reality is though, in order for Jones to make those types of dollars he’s gonna have to go fight a guy like that in boxing and get a boxing type of contract. So it’s not wrong, you know what I’m saying? He’s not wrong, so yeah, still not interested in it.”
