Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. is shocked that there is any discussion of a fight between Manny Pacquiao and Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
Pacquiao is the WBO welterweight champion, while Canelo is the WBO junior middleweight beltholder.
The Filipino star recaptured the title last Saturday night in Las Vegas after a very impressive performance against Jessie Vargas at the Thomas & Mack Center. Canelo dropped back to 154 in September and captured the WBO belt with a knockout of Liam Smith in nine rounds at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, wants his boxer to face Canelo (48-1-1, 34KOs) in 2017. As long as there is a rehydration clause that controls Canelo's weight on the day of the fight - Roach feels confident that Pacquiao can outbox him.
Pacquiao (59-6-2, 38KOs) is a former junior middleweight champion, but that contest took place at a catch-weight of 150-pounds with Antonio Margarito in 2010.
Pacquiao re-captured the WBO's world title at the welterweight limit of 147-pounds on Saturday night, when he dominated Jessie Vargas at the Thomas & Mack Center.
"I think Manny can outbox him. Obviously he's a good puncher, but I think like Amir Khan beat him for the first five rounds and then just got caught.... he made an amateur mistake. I think Manny is better than that. With him, you just have to put a cap on.... on what he can weigh after the weigh-in. He does get very big, over twenty pounds and so forth, and you have to keep him at a certain range to be fair," Roach said.
Chavez believes that any talk of facing Canelo is suicide - because he feels Pacquiao is way too small to even be considered for a fight with Canelo or Gennady Golovkin at 154-pounds. Pacquiao only weighed in at 144.8-pounds for the fight with Vargas.
"I said that the most that Manny could make was 145 pounds [for Vargas]. He couldn't even make 145 pounds and they want to put him in with Canelo, with Golovkin . They want to get him killed," said Chavez Sr.
Chavez Sr. feels Pacquiao, who is going to be 38-years-old, should retire from boxing. Pacquiao actually retired in April, but a few months later he announced his return to the ring.
"I think he should already say goodbye to boxing, that's the truth, but he did always give us good times," Chavez Sr. said.
