Tony Grano withdrew Thursday from his Aug. 3 fight against heavyweight contender Tomasz Adamek after suffering a herniated disk in his neck during training camp.
After Grano informed promoter Kathy Duva about his injury, the 36-year-old Adamek (48-2, 29 KOs) agreed later Thursday to fight Dominick Guinn (34-9-1, 23 KOs) in a 10-round bout that’ll be broadcast by NBC Sports Network from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
Houston’s Guinn is 38, has lost three out of his last four fights and hasn’t fought since knocking out journeyman Stacy Frazier (15-13, 14 KOs) in the first round 13 months ago. Guinn was promoted earlier in his career by Main Events, the Totowa, N.J., based company that represents Poland’s Adamek, which made the fight easier to make on such short notice.
The 32-year-old Grano (20-3-1, 16 KOs) lost his last fight to Eric Molina (20-2, 14 KOs) by unanimous decision, but he is from nearby Hebron, Conn., and was expected to help draw a larger crowd to the card.
Adamek will fight for the first time since scoring a controversial split-decision defeat of Philadelphia’s Steve Cunningham (25-6, 12 KOs) in their 12-round rematch Dec. 22 in Bethlehem, Pa.
