Mick Hall had taken more than an enough punishment Saturday night.
After a one-sided sixth round against Denzel Bentley, referee Steve Gray understandably stopped their scheduled 10-round middleweight match in London. The flashy Bentley beat up the brave but overmatched Hall for much of their bout on the Joe Joyce-Michael Wallisch undercard.
London’s Bentley, 25, upped his record to 13-0. He also won by knockout for the 11th time since he turned pro in October 2017.
The 34-year-old Hall (15-3, 2 KOs), of Preston, England, lost by knockout for the second time in his 10-year pro career.
Bentley’s win was televised by BT Sport in the United Kingdom and streamed by ESPN+ in the United States.
Bentley battered Hall for much of the sixth round. He nailed Hall with two staggering right hands in the first half of the sixth, before belting Hall with a straight left that backed him into the ropes later in the sixth.
Hall courageously took all those punishing punches, but his face was visibly bruised and marked up as he slumped while sitting in his corner following the sixth round. That’s when Gray halted the action.
Bentley switched back to his natural, orthodox stance to begin the fifth round and unloaded various power punches on Hall. Gray gave Bentley a brief break in that fifth round after Hall hit him low.
Hall had some success later in the fifth round, when he was busier and out-landed a retreating Bentley.
Hall landed several right hands in the fourth round, yet nothing hard enough to keep Bentley from moving forward. Just as he did during the third round, Bentley boxed well from a left-handed stance throughout the fourth round.
Bentley went at Hall from a southpaw stance for much of the third round. He out-boxed Hall in those three minutes, but Bentley didn’t hurt him.
Bentley belted Hall with two left hooks early in the second round and continued letting his hands go in that round. A confident Bentley largely kept his hands down in that round and pressed the action throughout it.
An overhand right by Bentley backed into his own corner later in the second round.
Bentley blasted Hall with a left hook up top and then a hard, left hook to the body in the final minute of the first round.
In the previous bout, 19-year-old British prospect Henry Turner knocked down Chris Adaway in the third round and easily won a four-round decision in a welterweight bout.
England’s Turner, a southpaw who won 40-35, improved to 3-0. The 26-year-old Adaway (10-68-4, 1 KO) has lost 15 of his past 16 bouts.
