Former WBC super lightweight champion Pedro "Perico" Fernandez has passed away in Zaragoza (Spain) at the age of 64. The reason of death is undisclosed but Fernandez had been under medical care since 2012.
Fernandez went 82-28-15 in a career that lasted from 1972 through 1987. He became WBC champion in 1974 but lost the title to Saensak Muangsurin the year after.
Before and after his stint as world champ Fernandez also held the EBU title. In 1977 Fernandez lost a rematch to Muangsurin and also lost fights to the likes of Jim Watt, Jo Kimpuani and Jorgen Hansen.
Veteran heavyweight Sherman "Tank" Williams (38-15-2) has been in Denmark training newcomers Pierre Madsen, Tobias Soerig and now also Osama Hadifi. Williams has been sparring with Madsen and Soerig and things have gone well. So well so that the Caribbean Tank will be featured on the Danish Fight Night show in Aarhus December 3 promoted by Brian Nielsen and Mogens Palle. Opponent is to be announced.
Super middleweight Lolenga Mock is also among the headliners. Madsen, a 5-0 heavyweight prospect, is also on the bill while Tobias Soerig is sidelined with a hand injury.

Super featherweight Zoltan Kovacs (17-5-1) take on Cosmas Cheka (17-6-5, from Tanzania but based in Russia) November 12 in Szekesfehervar (Hungary) with the vacant WBO European title at stake. Middleweight prospect Norbert Harcsa (6-0) is in against Estonian veteran Sergej Melis (26-22) and welterweights Balasz Torteli (9-1) and Gyorgy Miszej Jr, (24-19) with the vacant Hungarian title at stake.

MK Event, headed by Malamine Kone, staged a big show last night at the Georges Carpentier Hall in Paris. The main fight was an all French matchup super featherweights Guillaume Frenois (42-1) and Samir Ziani (23-2-1) for the vacant EBU title. Frenois won a unanimous decision on scores of 115-113 on all cards in an excellent and classic matchup between a boxer and a slugger where neither had the punch to hurt the other.
Lightheavy Hakim Zoulikha (24-8) outscored Kevn Tomas Cojean (20-7-1) in another all French matchup to win the vacant EU title. It was scored 117-111, 116-112 and 116-113 after an entertaining fight.
Yacid Amghar (16-0) won the French super lightweight title with a split ten round decision over defending champion Renald "Lion" Garrido (17-1-4-1). It was scored 96-94 and 97-93 for Amghar and 96-94 for the always tough Garrido.
Super lightweight Yvan Mendy (36-4-1) knocked out Italian Massimiliano Ballisai (20-4) in the fifth for the vacant IBF Intercontinental title.
Female super feather Maiva Hamadouche (14-1) outscored American Jennifer Salinas (19-4) to win the vacant IBF super feather title. The judges had it 97-93 twice and 98-92.
On the undercard Rachid Achioui (6-0) outscored Romain Tilliot (7-7) over six on scores of 60-54 twice and 59-55.
