Time is running out for former four division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs), who plans to retire at the end of the year but wants to have at least two fights before walking off for good.
The Puerto Rican superstar has been out of the ring since November of 2015, when he lost a twelve round unanimous decision to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
It has been a month since Roc Nation announced the cancellation of Cotto's fight against James Kirkland and there is still no definitive new date on the horizon. Cotto was set to face Kirkland in an HBO Pay-Per-View main event on February 25th in Texas. The fight was canceled after Kirkland withdrew from the bout with a fractured nose suffering in training camp.
The discussions are ongoing with Cotto's promoter, Roc Nation Sport.
"We are still in talks with the Roc Nation executives," said Bryan Perez of Miguel Cotto Promotions, during an interview with Jose Sanchez. "Time does not stop and we would like to have a date so we can make the necessary arrangements."
There has been some discussion of a possible fight with former champion Juan Manuel Marquez, but that would take place in the the fall - if they are ever able to agree on a catch-weight.
While everything plays out, Cotto has continued with the training plan outlined by his training team of Freddie Roach and Gavin McMillan.
"Miguel continues training as instructed, to be fit for the eventuality of returning to Los Angeles [to train with Roach at the Wild Card Boxing Club]. We must have something for next week. June would be a good date because it would give us room for another (fight) before the end of the year," Perez said.
After Kirkland withdrew, the boxer returned back home to Puerto Rico to be with his family.
