Bantamweight Eros Correa is hoping his bout on Saturday leads to a dream coming true and a fight for a world title.
He faces unbeaten contender Michael Angeletti at the Boeing Center at Tech Port in San Antonio, Texas on ProBox TV.
Correa, 15-1 (9 KOs), a 32-year-old from San Jose, California, is looking for what has evaded him: a title shot. One notable achievement for Correa is a 2011 amateur win over two-division titleholder Stephen Fulton Jnr. Despite excitement at the start of Correa’s career based on his amateur success, the big fight in the pros hasn’t come yet.
“This fight is everything to me,” Correa told BoxingScene. “I know if I beat Angeletti, I’ll be knocking on the door for a world title shot. I feel like I’m finally getting the chance to show the world who I am and what I’m made of.”
Correa will find himself against a like-minded opponent in the 28-year-old Angeletti, who is 12-0 (8 KOs), and who had a deep amateur pedigree, even making it to being the No.1 seed at the 2020 Olympic Trials in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Angeletti from Spring, Texas, will likely have the support of locals. Correa is not motivated by talking smack about his opponent and even shares an admiration for their similar journeys.
“I respect Michael – he’s a good fighter with a solid amateur background, just like me,” Correa said. “We both know what it’s like to be hungry, and that’s why this fight is going to be special.”
Correa has a five-fight win streak since his loss to Katsuma Akitsugi in 2021. One of his victories was against Saul Sanchez via split decision. Sanchez went on to challenge then WBO bantamweight titleholder Jason Moloney in January 2024 but Correa knows how hard it is to get an opportunity in the sport.
He has moved his training camp to Las Vegas
“A win is everything right now, it keeps me on the path I’ve been grinding for – it keeps the doors open for bigger opportunities,” Correa said. “I’ve had to put everything else on hold; family time, holidays, all that stuff. But this is my dream, and it’s all worth it to come out on top this Saturday.”
