Flyweight prospect Andres Campos defeated Ramon Velasquez by unanimous decision Friday night at the Gimnasio Municipal in Lo Barnechea, Chile.
All three judges scored the bout 98-91 in favor of Campos, who improves to 10-0, 2 knockouts.
The clash between Campos, who resides in nearby Santiago, and Velasquez was a rematch of their September 2019 bout that Campos by knockout in round 6.
Campos, who had a four-inch height advantage, utilized his height and reach to rain combinations down onto the game Velasquez. The 24-year-old was the more-effective boxer throughout the fight.
Velasquez was able to get on the inside of Campos’ guard at times, but was deducted a point in round 9 by referee Daniel Cisternas for butting Campos with his head. Although it was unintentional, Cisternas had warned Velasquez a handful of times during the fight.
The victory over Velasquez marked Campos’ return to action since the COVID-19 pandemic. He had not fought since defeating Pedro Villegas on March 14 of last year in a clash of unbeaten fighters.
Campos, who has traveled to Australia and the United States to train and spar twin brother Andrew and Jason Moloney, owns two regional title belts and could defend those belts and vie for more in his next fight, according to manager Tony Tolj.
“It was great to have Campos back in the ring for being out of action due to COVID for over a year,” Tolj told BoxingScene Monday morning. “There was a bit of ring rust and some dirty tactics that made Andres work hard for each round, but the longer the fight went, the more the old Campos resurfaced.
“We plan on (having) him back up in May with WBO and WBA regional (title) defenses and continuing his journey to become the first world champion from Chile.”
Velasquez, who resides in Quellon, Chile, drops to 7-5 and has lost his last five bouts.
