  • Middle knuckle pain

    Hi guys.

I have a problem with my middle finger knuckle. I have this sharp pain in my knuckle when I do boxing. Noticed it before, but then I took some time off when I felt it and it usually went away.

This spring I had a fight and during camp, the pain came back.
This time I ignored the pain and kept hitting the mitts. On the worst days my knuckle would turn purple after training. The days after I felt pain just by touching it. I've read some about boxers knuckle, but then the tendon is supposed to slip off the knuckle - which my doesn't do. I did, however, felt some creaking under the skin on my knuckle when moving my finger back and forth. I've had this pain in both my middle finger knuckle, but it's the left which is bothering me now. I'm pretty sure it isn't broken, cause then I wouldn't be able to hit at all

Came here hoping anyone of you have experienced something like this and could give me some tips and information. I do really wanna continue to train and fight.
    All help is much appreciated.

My middle knuckles is also a bit bigger then the others and always has been. Attached a picture for you to take a look.

    Thanks guys.

I've got pointy knuckles as well and get this problem. It's called "boxer's knuckle". Looks like your tendon travels right over the top, which probably exacerbates the problem too.
Rest makes it go away and the best thing I've found for preventing it is the Winning gel knuckle guard. Really shields the tendons without altering the fist or form. I can still manage to get irritation if I punch hard enough but the knuckle guard + good gloves and proper wrapping minimizes it tremendously.

Thanks, I will check out the gel knuckle guard. I recently bought new gloves. Twins special. Also going to use a new wrapping method - the ribbon method for extra knuckle protection. But should I rest it if I feel the pain and wait till it's gone? I'll guess work through the pain isn't the smartest. Will this go away or am I stuck with this because of pointy knuckles?

Only problem with gel knuckle guard is that I guess they won't fit under the mma gloves along with wraps.

Be cautious about MuayThai gloves as they sometimes shift some of the padding for blocking and aren't as protective in the knuckle. There's a reason the higher level level MMA guys use quality boxing gloves when training on the bag.
If you're talking about 4-5oz MMA gloves, even worse, never hit a heavy bag w/ those.

You need to rest until the pain goes down, then proceed slowly until you can hit the bag with little or no pain. Tendons heal much slower than muscle. Aggravating them can not only prolong healing, but can cause them to tear and necessitate surgery. There is no "working though the pain" with tendons because they will only get worse. Be careful.

These gloves are supposed to have good knuckle padding. So I've read at least. Have not got a chance to test them yet.

Yeah, I never hit the heavy bag with my MMA gloves.

I usually rest when I feel pain, except that one time when I had camp for my fight. Hope that didn't cause my tendon to tear.

I'll definitely follow your advice and proceed with caution.

Thanks a lot man, I really appreciate your tips and information.

English/American is not my native language and there is no point being offensive.

Went back and edited it just for you. There you go darling.

Pay no attention to Baya, he hasn't had his shots of whiskey in the morning. He's much nicer after a few drinks.
