    Just get 16oz I don't understand why you need to spar someone with 14oz gloves.

      In my gym, we make sure everyone is sparring with the proper equipment. Not only for the protection of your partner, but for your protection.

      No reason for a 154lb fighter to be sparring with 14oz gloves. Use 16 or 18oz, proper headgear and a good mouth piece.

      I don't get these gyms that allow anything else.

        In my gyms and with my fighters in other gyms the 14oz would be fine up to 47--54lbs. The brand has a lot to do with weight choices also. I used Shevlan gloves for many years and their design gave more padding in the fist area and wrists than any where else on the gloves. They were one of the first with a safe but comfortable thumb placement. So theres more variables involved with choosing a glove than just weight.
        You don't always go bigger for safety, with heavy punchers if your adding weight to their hands that may not be the safe route hahahaha!!!

        Who ever is in control of the session has more to do with safety than gloves used!
        When I sparred way back when I never used bigger gloves than fight gloves (8or 10oz). It made no sense to use anything but fight gloves. Things have changed a lot since then.
        Intelligence = safety...........Ray.

          You might want to go for the 16oz (for sparring atleast). The main glove I use now for bag/mitts is 14oz but for sparring I use 16oz and im 6'0 150. Hitting the bag/mitts its up to you, but sparring just go for the 16oz

            Nobody above 125 is allowed to use less than 16oz in my gym. That's also only during the exception of the smaller guy sparring with a bigger guy. Guys of same size always use 16oz. It's for safety of both partners.

              Exactly. You train to learn, not to hurt each other. I mean, why would you use anything smaller?

              You don't want to get cut or seriously hurt. Most of the pro's in our gym, use facebar headgear so as not ot get cut.

                Did you see Andre Ward get cut in a Winning headgear w/facebar?

                  I have a facebar headgear. They aren't 100% protection, but it generally prevents mouth injuries. I wear it whenever a new cut appears in my lips. It's nice to allow cuts to heal, rather than aggravating it without giving it any chance to heal up.

                  Usually I switch back and forth between full bar and open face, depending on how badly my mouth and nose get throughout weeks of sparring. In the end, it doesn't matter how good the headgear is, because awkward angles can always cause cuts.

                    I don't understand why you'd spar with 14oz gloves either. Makes no sense to me.
