  • Issue with beeing tense in shoulders (Sparring/Mit/Heavy Bag)

    Hello!

I have a little problem which i've been struggling with almost since i began boxing!

I have a pretty mixed style, I feel most comfortable in the philly-shell defence, and bring my offence mostly
    out off counters, and potshots

Anyway! Im an orthodox boxer, so I use my left shoulder to cover my chin (Left side of face)
and the right glove is on the side of my face, I've noticed that every time I spar, or doing some mit work
with my trainer, My left trap gets pumped as hell, aswell as as i tire in my shoulders quicker than most
I understand that If you drag your shoulder up for defence you eventually get tired, but when i'm doing mitwork
i sometimes try to just keep it down, but it automaticly goes up, and i just feel stiff in both of my shoulders

I'm not nervous, or tense or anything like that, I try to relax jump up and down, beeing "loose"
but eventually I end up pretty tense in my stance and rely on my footwork and waist-movement to get out of harms way
(Style is pretty similar to Guillermo Rigondeaux, not that I compare myself to him but just to give you the idea)

Anyway, what im asking is for tips, exercises, ANYTHING to just
make me relax in my shoulders, i bring both my shoulders up during shadowboxing and mitwork and keeping them up
like that makes them tire so much faster than they should

So i'm open for all suggestions and tips

    kind regards
    Patrick

It could be in imbalance from the philly-shell defence which i personally think you should tryout other techniques but thats here nor there. To answer your question Youtube... Yoga like a 15 min video, mediation techniques, shoulder stretches, and hip stretches do one of those everyday for the next week and you wont have the problem anymore trust me on this... If it doesn't help let me know next week.

Best thing to do before you go in there is use "Deep Breathing Techniques" Youtube or Google it.....Do that before you jump rope or shadow box do that right away and it should help out a lot.

      Thanks!
      I'll deff try it out!
I tried "finding" myself long time ago and always went back to the philly shell style, its there i feel most secure, confident and comfortable.. I'll youtube it and try it out, i'll let you know how it goes :-)

      Edit:
I actually youtubed some tips yesterday and tried it in todays boxing class, It was actually about balance, to make sure I was not leaning forward making me have to lift my hands higher than just letting them "rest on my body"

But it didnt seem to do much

When not boxing or running I sit alot infront of the computer,
and i've gotten like "computer shoulders" you know they want to go up by themselves when i'm standing up relaxed, i think its from having my arms resting on the computer table and the chair beeing to low making my shoulders pop up rather than having them hanging naturally

But i will try this out, It really feels that some stretching, yoga-ish exercises would do the trick, since I'm pretty much tense walking into the boxing club

      Thanks again!
