  • Punching Causing Shoulder Injury?

    Hi,

I wanted your guys advice on my shoulders. I am pretty new to boxing and i have injured my left shoulder while sparring. I sublexated my shoulder (popped out and jolted back in). I could hardly use my shoulder so I rested it for 3 weeks and when it felt better I began to train again and then immediately sublexated my shoulder again while throwing a left hook. My right shoulder also feels weird and sore sometimes when I throw out some jabs, but mainly hooks. Am I throwing my punches improperly? I will go and see a doctor about this but was wondering what could be causing this? Thanks

In my first fight a guys head came up into and hit my shoulder and knocked it out of place except mine didnt pop back in. The ref had to get the doctor to pop it in but I was lucky there was no time left in the fight and I still won. I went to a doctor and I had a compound fracture and I had to take a month off. Even after a month off my should still would pop out and then back in again for about 4 or 5 months. Even in my second fight 2 days before it popped out sparring. but now my arm is fine and it feels normal just like my other arm but it took at least 9 or 10 months to fully heal to the point where it stays in place and doesnt twinge or feel sore at night. But I have to do all these special exercises to help the muscle around the arm because all the tendons and ligaments were all stretched and the doctor said they wouldnt be able to properly hold the arm in place and pretty much there is a 85-90 percent chance it will dislocate again.

so your shoulder is good now to throw all your punches? What excerises are you doing for your shoulder? I love boxing although I feel I need a lot of work and my shoulder is slowing me down. It sucks.

      Thanks for the response

I had the exact same problem, but my shoulder popped during football, hockey and a street fight...

benchpress.. You obviously do it.. when you bring your weight down to your chest.. Stop when your arm form a 90degree angle..Meaning don't let the bar touch yoru chest...
Another thing when doing bench, try to make sure your hands on the bar are in-line with yoru shoulders, giving them more support.
Your gonna have to do like a year of shoulder exercises with light weights but very repetative and constant..
When you punch or throw hooks, don't extend your arms too far out. The further out/wide they are, the more strain on yoru shoulders..
Talk to your doc and see if you did any serious damage, blowin rotators cuff, torn ligaments anything like that..
I popped my shoulder like 6yrs ago and it's still preventing me from finishing work outs today..

          Good advice,

Does your shoulder still pop out today during workouts? Are you able to sparr? Sorry to hear about your shoulder, I better make sure I go see a doctor then. I think my hooks did a lot of damage to my shoulder because I sparr a lot with a friend of mine who is 6'3" and 200lbs while im 5'8" 160lbs so I feel like I have to stretch all my punches in fear of his reach advantage.

          Thanks

You probably need a shoulder cuff operation and untill then work on blackburn exercises... google them

no need to say goodbye to anything..

if your shoulder is popping out while punch, then you are punching wrong.

Could be anything. Only person who will really be able to tell is a doctor! It may be that you're over reaching with your punches. I had this problem a few weeks ago, rested my shoulder for 2 weeks and try not to over reach with my straight right and it feels ok now.
