  • Your view on ankle weights?

People either say its very benificial or horrible for your knees, joints, etc.

I only plan on using them for long walks, when i shadow box, and hit the heavy bag. Can this be harmful?

I imagine it can only be bad for ur joints if you run with them on. If anyone knows anything let me know.

Also, FLOYD MAYWEATHER, uses them them when he hits the bag. Take that into consideration.

I use them for jogging, shadowboxing and for hitting the heavy bag. Very useful IMO, but wouldn't keep them on for a long time (kill knees)

No use for them at all!!!!! Want to add to your running? Hills! Beaches! Decline (carefully)
Never used them for boxing and would never allow anyone I'm training to use them either!!!

Duck walks with a broom handle on your shoulders!!!

Why add stress to your ankles, kness and hips? Same with wrist weights, hold something in your hand not on your wrists! Ray

I'm with Ray, they sound like a great idea but don't work in practice. They've never helped my running, skipping or boxing footwork......they're just an injury risk. People are tricked because if you say do some shadowboxing with them on for a few minutes and then take them off, you feel quite light and quick for a while. But it is all an illusion, you aren't faster and you haven't mysteriously improved your stamina.

If you want to strengthen your legs; hill sprints, squats, calf/hamstring extensions will be key.

If you want to improve your footspeed, some speed skipping drills, sprint drills should help.

i use them for a wide variety of stuff. the main problem is over extension. if you run with them your knees will be under more pressure as your kick your leg out in front of you, over extending the kick motion because of the weight. as long as you avoid impact exercises, running, skipping, jumping theres loads of ways to use them. heres some things i do.

use them while doing any ground exercises that invlove the legs, single leg raises, v sit ups, holding legs just off the floor ect

use them for other core exercises like taking it in turns to hold a leg off the ground while in a press up positon or stand up straight on one leg and move the other leg (knee bent at 90 degrees) left and right

put them over your feet while sitting in a chair and do shin curls to help prevent shin splints

shadow box keeping always some bend in your knees over exagerating steps

Long walk can be harmful if you have say knee problems. This is my experience, basically, when the joint is not "tight", using ankle weights for long time (because of long walks), can be harmful indeed. I saw Floyd like you mentioned, also Sugar Ray Leonard and recently Bradley using them for shadow boxing and sparring. My experience, I did not have problems with the knee using ankle weights when I shadow boxed or sparred. I guess this is because I slide my feet more or less when moving in the ring, unlike long walks, when you lift them.

I've tried them in sparring, it's ok, my legs were light as a feather and flying everywhere when i took them off, lol. but i would rather work on foot's speed and indurance seperate from sparring.

and don't put too much weight, you don't want to injure or tear a ligament, thats the main concerned, or was mine when i did it for about 3 weeks. I wouldn't do it all time either depending on your age.
