  • Hit pads hard or not?

I am pro fighter, and train on pads with my trainer 3-4 days a week. Quite often the focus is on hitting with maximum force and power.

I just came across a clip Of Floyd sr training Chris eubank jr. Here they seem to be working on speed, counters and fast sharp punches.

Also Floyd mayweather jr doesn't hit the pads that hard.

Should power punching be only used on a heavy bag or is there a need for both power and speed on the pads?

    Thoughts?

the way i see it they are for perfecting your skills, so you hit as hard and fast as you can while maintaining perfect form, to increase the speed and power at that perfect form

You get a better workout if the person holding the pads doesn't slam them with force. It gives the illusion that you're hitting that hard but in reality it's the trainer. Tell them to throw the with less force next time and see how much harder you have to work. It's like night and day.

I hit them like I would hit an opponent for the most part.

There are alot of ways to do things, so do what works for you.

I trained as I fought and fought as trained. I put some power into them, always did. I wanted speed, power and precision and I got it.

I worked the pads throwing tons of punches while slipping, blocking and putting good power in there. People have always said that you can never go into the ring to fight and throw tons of punches every round. First if you believe that you will never be able to. And certainly if your not trained to throw like that you won't be able to fight hard through the whole fight. I trained hard and I fought even harder. But my mind and body were prepared to throw hard for the whole fight. Blah, blah....... I liked to put power with the speed and precision on the mitts. I fought as I trained and trained as I fought.

Most of the times that I see guys just touching the mitts are when the trainers shoulders are worn or there is a television crew watching. Maybe just touching the mitts is the new thing. I'd rather get my entire body prepared and built strong in stamina and endurance while exercising, that's why I always gave what I had and then some no matter the drill or exercise.............Rockin'
