  • Lace-up or Hook-and-Loop.

I'm in the market for some new sparring gloves, currently looking at some Grants. The only problem is that they are lace-up. Are the benefits of lace-ups really worth the hassle of getting someone to tie/untie them all the time, or should I just look for a hook-and-loop glove?

    Thanks.

My bag gloves are Velcro but personally I just like lace-up sparring gloves. If you don't have someone to tie them up I don't think there's really any benefit.

I'll have my coach and sparring partners, but don't want to be coming a pain in the arse like 'Oh mate, can you just help me with these' every two seconds. If there's no discernible difference I'll just go velcro.

I don't have a lot of experience with velcro/laced up gloves but I think generally you get better wrist support with the laced gloves. I just ordered a pair of Title velcro Gel sparring gloves and the wrist support is just too loose (I'm returning the gloves today to get a lace up pair)...

Also, I think that you can buy at Ringside, a velcro strap that converts the laced gloves to a velcro glove...

if you can get somebody to lace them (and you should if you are sparring with them) you should get lace up gloves

the quality is vastly, superior, you'll find

if you use the gloves enough you'll notice the difference in the way they wear//beak in

and of course you get some actual wrist support (though your wraps on your hand should provide the bulk of your support there)

velcro and a stretchy band just doesnt cut it.

id only suggest a hook // loop if you cant consistently get somebody to lace them up for you.

it only takes a couple mins and if you are at a gym your coaches will probably be fine helping you out

While we're on the subject, I'm looking to buy a nice pair of sparring gloves. I'm debating whether to get a lace up or velcro pair of Lonsdales. Here are the two styles I'm looking at:

Lonsdale Pro Safe Spar Training Gloves

Lonsdale Elite Molded Foam Sparring Gloves - Lace

I'd go with lace ups man. I know how you feel that it's a pain to ask someone to tie and untie but it's not a big deal. People ask me to tie and untie their gloves and I don't mind.

Lace up gloves are the way to go. Everybody in a gym will need somebody to lace them up, you lace his he laces yours another time. It's just a neccesity, everybody laces and gets laced it's no big deal.

Laced gloves won't give you better wrist support, I mean a tad maybe. But if your throwing your punches with your wrist ****ed your going to F up your wrists whether your wearing loop or laces.

The big difference that I found in the 2 gloves was that a laced glove will not lose the grip/fit as the hook and loop gloves will during combat. I F'n hated it when I was in a war of a sparring session and I'm having to refit my hand in the glove so I could have a good grip inside of these hook and lace gloves while were sparring. It not only sucks that your hand slips in the glove but it takes your concentration and can leave you vulnerable if you're having to adjust the fit of the glove.

Go with the laced gloves. Once you're in and laced up tight you will not lose the grip/fit of the glove........Rockin'

I like the secure fit and support of a laced glove. But, they're definitely a PITA. So, I havea 16oz lace for sparring and a smaller velcro for general use.
