  • Labrum tear surgery and boxing

Labrum tear in the shoulder is a fairly common injury so I just wanted to post my experiences on boxing and labrum tear surgery because I couldn't find anything useful when I was hoping to start boxing. Maybe someone in the same situation will find this thread or something. If you ever dislocate a shoulder chances are you also get a labrum tear. The tear makes the shoulder susceptible to random dislocations, for example uppercuts, hooks and long jabs can result into a dislocation.

I had been doing mt for two years and after the surgery I figured it's too risky for and was hoping to switch to boxing but I couldn't find any decent information if it's doable. The surgeon was confident that I could whatever sports I'd want but other doctors not so much. Figured I'd give it a shot anyways. On the bright side I would get a two month vacation popping painkillers if my shoulder dislocated again. Anyways, it looks like it's doable.

I've been training for 8 months now without problems and my shoulder feels 100%, actually more stable than ever. Didn't slack in first 3 months of rehabiliation but started slipping later on when the shoulder was better. Training was impossible 6 months post op. At 10 months I started at a fitness boxing class because I didn't want to go to a real gym just to quit. It was somewhat **** with occasional pains but felt otherwise fine so I switched to a real gym after two months. I suppose it wasn't that great until 14 months after the surgery, didn't train that hard before it felt 100%. Now 18 months after the only thing is that missed (wild) uppercuts can lead to unstable sensations(popping) but my healthy shoulder does that **** too and it doesn't lead to injuries so I'm not too worried.

Some random stuff found from google and doctors that may or may not be true:
    -never slack on rehab
-the result depends largely on the surgeon(a doctor told me)
-no guarantees, it may or may not dislocate again. Further dislocations occur more commonly on younger age and are more uncommon as you get older(lol)

Now someone might think why would I risk it with boxing. A good question I suppose. I hate the idea of not being able to do something, I'd rather **** my head in the wall instead of quitting without even trying. Imo physical exercise is important to your overall wellbeing, weights, jogging etc. only is not for me. Also, I sit on the computer too ****ing much, I'd be broken before I hit my thirties.

    Hi,

I have a labrum/labral tear in both shoulders from multiple dislocations. I still box and have done for years and my shoulders occasionally 'pop' and hurt.
