  • tyson number system and combinations

    hi,

maybe it's been asked before, but i couldnt find any related infos on the board.

i know cus d'amato used a number system for tyson to throw punches in bunches

does anyone know the correct number system and the combinations taught by cus and rooney ?

all i found is this but i dont know if its correct :

1 - Left hook to head.
2 - Straight right to head/right hook to head.
    3 - Left uppercut.
    4 - Right uppercut.
5 - Left hook to body.
6 - Right hook to body.
    7 - Jab to head.
    8 - Jab to body.

thx a lot for your help

Dude I don't think anyone cares about some dumb number system, that's not what got tyson to the top it was hard work, so stop worrying about that and go train or something.

If you have got a combination in mind, but your opponent does something you dont expect, you cant complete a combinatination can you?
Do you just stop and try again.?

What would be the point of using that number system over the normal system? That system doesn't even provide for straight rights to the body, and includes right hooks which are generally worthless.

Of course, many people would drive their cars off a bridge if Tyson did it.

You got that from a thread where I typed it up. That is indeed the numbering system. I'd post the combinations, but I only have a short time online. Just look up some early Tyson videos on YouTube and take note of his combos.

Again, I have to ask what the point is of using that system instead of the regular number system.

it was unique to Tyson and thats why he used it most likely.

there are no advantages or disadvantages only a preference for what some fighters like.

It seems flawed in that it doesn't include a straight right to the body, yet it does include a right hook, which is not a punch that most boxers should learn.

It allowed his trainer to call out various combinations during a fight and from repeated practice of hitting those numbers it became second nature for him to be able to execute any combination without thinking about it, making him a faster and more intelligent fighter, as well as the fact that a Tyson opponent wouldn't understand when Kevin Rooney would yell "Mike, 7, 2, 5, 2" as opposed to the lengthy, understood-by-all, and infective "Mike, jab, right hand, left hook to body, right hand." As for why the numbers are different from the traditional "1, 2, 3, and 4", it's because there are more than four punches in boxing and if a trainer yells "1, 2, 3", to his fighter, then the opponent is going to know what to expect.

Next time if ever a picture is posted of Mike next to a silver car, make sure your Tyson hate is boiling and you ask and make a big deal about what the tactical advantage of silver would be over any other color.
