  • Shoulder Hurts When I throw Hooks? I need help!

I injured my shoulder messing around with a friend. He is 260 pounds and I am 168. I hit him with my left and my shoulder felt a sharp pain. i rested for a couple of days, and went back to the gym. I can throw jabs just fine, but when I throw my hook it really hurts. My shoulder hurts when I throw hooks and left body shots. I really want to train, but I do not want to re-aggravate it. What should I do? Any suggestions out there? Has anyone experienced this before? Please help.

I have done the same thing a few times in the past decade. One of two things, either its tendinitis or rotator cuff injury. Either way you need to restrict yourself from throwing hooks for at least three weeks. As much as that always sucks. Rotator cuff injuries can get real bad. The first time i injured it i ignored it as much as i could and kept training. Ended up messed up so bad I had to stop for 6 months! Couldn't even reach back to grab my wallet it hurt so bad. Second time I took two weeks off as soon as I realized what had happened. Then spent a few weeks rehabing it. Ended up just fine.

As to which it might be it just depends. You can test that yourself. Stand square and put your arm out in front of you like a jab. Now swing it back so it points to your left, staying parallel with the floor. If this hurts its likely tendinitis. This almost always happens because the front deltoids(shoulders) and chest get way more work than the rear. The front becomes stronger and pulls on the weaker rear tendon and muscles, causing tears and pain. If this is the case you need to take a few weeks off then start doing LIGHT weight rear delt raises. It will even out the strength difference so that the tendon can stop getting pulled and heal.

To see if it is the rotator cuff (A group of really small muscles under the shoulder muscles you actually see. They take care of rotation and stabilization), put your elbow to your sides with your hands out in front of you. Like you were pointing two tommy guns at some would be gangster. Lol. Then, with your elbows staying still, pull your hands into your stomach then reverse direction so your hands point out to your sides. Then try to put your arms up like you are flexing your guns. Keep your elbow still but rotate the shoulders so that the hands point down to the floor, then reverse and point them up again. If these movements hurt then its your rotator. Take a few weeks off then start doing some light rotator cuff exercises. These muscles are small and dont ever need heavy weight. Two weeks of this training will make your shoulders feel great. Look up rotator cuff exercises on the net. I do them all the time now. Just a few light sets at the end of my work outs. Havn't had shoulder problems since.

      Well, good luck

It might also be a torn labrum. The lining of the ball-socket joint that is your shoulder. This is close to worst case... I have had it.... it generally(always?) requires surgical repair.

Unfortunately I think you might want to see a doctor.

if you throw hooks with proper technique it won't hurt.. I've got the same injury at the moment and as long as I throw proper hooks and don't put too much through my jab I can still spar, but then again if your right hand isn't powerful enough for you to rely on it I would stay out of the sparring ring until its healed
